HO Scale
HO Scale: Gauge 16.5mm, Scale 1:87 3.5mm/foot. HO scale is preferred by Continental manufacturers (European and American), many of whom have been around for as long as Hornby have in the UK. While three rail control fell out of favour in Britain it still has a following in Europe and Marklin have persevered with the technology many other manufacturers produce 3 rail items (also known as AC or stud contact). DCC has been available for much longer from these firms and most (with the exception of Marklin) have developed NMRA standard, fully compatible, systems. Many models are now available with built-in sound units.
