The Cab Forward principle was heartily adopted by Southern Pacific (with nearly 200 engines of various
classes) as a remedy to the problem of smoke in long tunnels and snow sheds effectively blinding and
strangling the crews. Most of the Southern Pacific system used fuel oil instead of coal so it was a
relatively simple matter to get the fuel from the tender to the firebox at the opposite end.
By 1943, the design had advanced to the AC-12 class, the final class of Cab Forwards and in fact the final
steam locomotives built for Southern Pacific. The final AC-12's were retired in 1958 after long service in
freight and even heavy passenger service.
